Reiki is a Japanese word that loosely translates as "spiritually guided life force energy" (rei = spirit and ki = life energy). While energy healing has been utilized by humans in various forms for thousands of years, reiki as we know it today was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan over one hundred years ago.

"Ki"also known as "chi" (Chinese), "prana" (Sanskrit), "mana" (Hawaiian) and "biofield energy" (today's scientists), refers to the non-physical energy that animates all living things. When your life energy is low, or there is a restriction in flow, you will be more vulnerable to illness. When your "ki" is high, you are less likely to get sick. "Ki" is also the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts and spiritual life.


A reiki session addresses your mind, body and spirit, to bring all of you into a state of balance. It is in this state that your body's parasympathetic nervous system is activated so your self-healing systems function at their very best.

During a reiki session, you lie fully clothed on a treatment table. An eye pillow is placed over your eyes for optimal relaxation. The reiki practitioner will gently touch you (with permission) or hover hands inches above your body. You may feel sensations of warmth, cold, subtle movement or a tingling sensation. Some people feel nothing at all, and that's fine, too. The treatment is deeply relaxing and restorative. You may even fall asleep. A combination of essential oils, sound healing and/or crystals may be used to enhance the healing benefits of reiki.
